As someone who gets nail extensions and acrylic nails regularly, I thought I’d seen it all. But then I happened upon lipstick nails—aka nail extensions filed and shaped to look like an actual lipstick, and let me tell you, they are freaking cute. While coffin nails and stiletto nails are still staples in my roster of fav nail shapes, lipstick nails are fun, quirky, and almost futuristic, which is exactly why they’re a major 2022 nail trend. But, look, don’t just take my word for it, ‘cause not only did I chat with an actual nail artist to find out everything you need to know about lipstick nails, I also found the 17 coolest lipstick nail ideas to prove that this should be your next mani. From fun flowers and checkers to a cool snakeskin design, I promise there’s a set that fits your vibe. But first, let’s dive into what lipstick nails even are.

“Lipstick nails are a nail shape where the nail is filed into a slant—like the tip of a fresh lipstick,” says nail artist Kadimah Aaliyah, and were originally created by celebrity nail artist Park Eunkyung, inspired by the shape of cat eye sunglasses. And while Aaliyah says you can DIY lipstick nails at home if your natural nails are long enough, she recommends going to a nail salon to get them done by a professional nail artist. “If you have super-short natural nails, you’ll need extensions,” says Aaliyah. So unless you’re equipped with an acrylic nail kit, a nail pro is going to be your best option.

But before you head to the nail salon, Aaliyah says to make sure you’re prepared to take care of them. “Your nails are jewels, not tools,” she says. That means no opening cans with your nails, washing dishes without gloves, or moving heavy furniture to prevent breakage (and, um, a lot of pain). And just like any other mani, she also recommends applying a cuticle oil regularly to keep them looking and feeling fresh.
